Chapter 3 Lateral distance of perforators from the MGML The 34.2% of perforators (13 out of 38) arose on the cutaneous projec- tion of midline of the MGML. In the 87% of specimens (33 out of 38) perforators were within 1 cm from that line while only 13% (5 out of 38) were beyond 1 cm. (Tab.3.2, 3.3) Table 3.2 Number and Percentage of Perforators found according to the distance from the MGML. Table 3.3 Number and Percentage of Perforators found according to the Distance from the MGML in the Right and in the Left Inferior Limb. Diameter of perforators Before entering the fascia, the perforator artery diameter was on average 0.5 mm (range, 0.3 mm to 0.8 mm). Intramuscular pathway of perforators During intramuscular dissection of the pedicle, two configurations of its course were found: 70 % of perforators (14 out of 20), once piercing the fascia, ran deeply within the muscle substance, rendering the dissection difficult. In 30% of specimens (6 out of 20), perforators were found in the muscle immediately under the fascia. (Figs. 3.3, 3.4) 37
