The plus sign in our name indicates that we distinguish ourselves from other university medical centres for the attention we give to the patients’ environment, lifestyle and predisposition, and therefore to prevention. Circle of innovation The responsibility of Maastricht UMC+ spans the entire spectrum of the circle of innovation. We are at the cradle of new discoveries. This is our basis for the application of new knowledge and for the development of treatments, interventions and guidelines that contribute to healthy living. Within the circles of innovation, Maastricht UMC+ creates value that - in addition to direct economic eff ects including employment and cost-eff ective treatments - leads to a healthier population. Oncology profi le: ‘Early-stage breast cancer’ Early-stage breast cancer is part of the Oncology profi le. In the Netherlands, thousands of women, including young women between 30 and 50 years of age, are diagnosed with breast cancer each year. Their chances of survival are increasing thanks to the breast cancer population screening programme and the development of improved treatments and diagnostics. By using imaging, we are able to identify tumours sooner. Based on the DNA profi le, we can type each tumour in a unique way. This knowledge enables us to provide tailored care in which the patient’s voice takes centre place: shared decision-making. We also take future family planning into account and provide preimplantation genetic diagnostics (PGD) and the option to freeze egg cells. We share our knowledge and expertise within the OncoZON network and join forces with other partners in the south-east of the Netherlands.
