Circle of Innovation  Early-stage breast cancer LIFE WITH AND AFTER BREAST CANCER BIOMARKERS AND PROFILES + Breast cancer is a heterogeneous disease. Based on the DNA profile of the tumour and the patient, we are increasingly able to determine the subtype. + We carefully visualise the tumour by using molecular tracers and combined imaging techniques. + Models are used to further develop and refine nerve-sparing breast reconstruction with the patient’s own tissue. + New insights offer the best chance of recovery with the lowest risk of side effects in the short and long term. + New biomarkers are used to investigate the efficacy of new drugs. Maastricht UMC+ Circle of Innovation® + Breast cancer is the main cause of death in women between the age of 30 and 50 years. These women are in the prime of their lives. + Shared decision-making and intensive guidance provided by our breast cancer team increase acceptance and satisfaction in patients and their loved ones. + Survival is always the ultimate goal, but maintaining quality of life, breast shape, shoulder and arm function and fertility are also important. Generating knowledge JOINT DECISIONS, JOINT ACTIONS TARGETED TREATMENT + We are proud to receive the pink ribbon every year. In 2015 we even received the Golden Bust. + Giving attention to the patient’s personal wishes is our main priority. We stimulate shared decision-making by using a specially developed decision aid and offer a personalised aftercare plan. + Knowledge is exchanged with the regional OncoZON breast cancer team. + Our breast cancer team is internationally renowned for its contributions to new developments. + In view of future family planning, we offer cryopreservation of egg cells or embryos before the patient is started on chemotherapy as well as preimplantation genetic diagnostics in case of a known gene mutation. + Our breast cancer team has optimised sparing axillary dissection in order to maintain good shoulder and arm function. + Newly developed reconstruction techniques produce better breast shape. + Proton therapy makes more accurate radiation possible while minimising the risk of residual damage.
