Circle of Innovation  The Maastricht Study AGEING IN A HEALTHY COMMUNITY MEASURING FROM DIFFERENT ANGLES + We are constructing a detailed overview of the health of DSM participants: from microcirculation to social network. + To this end, we use advanced measurement techniques, body material and questionnaires. + We combine the collected data with the personal data of health care institutes, city councils and Statistics Netherlands (CBS), while safeguarding the participants’ privacy. + DMS leads to increased understanding of the development of diseases, to new treatment methods and to insights into the impact of chronic disease on the individual and on society. Maastricht UMC+ Circle of Innovation® + We are studying 10,000 people aged 40 to 75 in the province of South Limburg, representing a cross-section of the population. About half of them have been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. + The Maastricht Study (DMS) is an extensive five-year study. + DMS focuses on the prevalence, causes and effects of type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease and other chronic conditions. + DMS raises awareness of healthy living and prevention among the population. Generating knowledge COOPERATION FOR A HEALTHY SOCIETY DEVELOPING BETTER INTERVENTIONS + New methods for the prevention, diagnostics and treatment of chronic disease aim to increase social and labour force participation, quality of life and self-reliance. + DMS offers interesting traineeships for PhD and other students and makes the region attractive to, especially highly-educated, professionals. + The regional economic activity increases, an estimated 250 direct and indirect jobs will be created. + DMS provides a platform for testing and developing non-invasive technologies to monitor biological processes in the body. + We develop new methods for the prevention, (early) diagnostics and treatment of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. + By comparing people with and without type 2 diabetes, we have gained insight into the causes and diversity of complications. + Because of the close link between research and healthcare, the results of the study can be implemented promptly in treatment and lifestyle interventions.
