This is our basis for the application of new knowledge and for the development of treatments, interventions and guidelines that contribute to healthy living. Within the circles of innovation, Maastricht UMC+ creates value that - in addition to direct economic eff ects including employment and cost-eff ective treatments - leads to a healthier population. Brain and nerve disorder profi le: ‘Vestibular disorders’ Vestibular disorders are part of the Brain and Nerve Disorder profi le. This profi le focuses on the interaction between the brain and the environment as a consequence of conditions aff ecting the brain and peripheral nervous system. The vestibular system, located in the inner ear, is closely connected to the brain. The brain registers the signals and information provided by the vestibular system and adjusts a person’s behaviour or posture if necessary. Defects of the vestibular system lead to disorders that are not always recognised as such. Maastricht UMC+ is a centre of expertise in the fi eld of vestibular research and treatment and compiles knowledge about the fundamental functioning of the vestibular system. This knowledge has been translated into the world’s fi rst artifi cial vestibular system. The development of a unique integrated care pathway has set an international standard.
