Circle of innovation The responsibility of Maastricht UMC+ spans the entire spectrum of the circle of innovation. We are at the cradle of new discoveries. This is our basis for the application of new knowledge and for the development of treatments, interventions and guidelines that contribute to healthy living. Within the circles of innovation, Maastricht UMC+ creates value that - in addition to direct economic effects including employment and cost-effective treatments - leads to a healthier population. Ophthalmology specialty: ‘Cataract’ Cataract research and treatment is part of the Ophthalmology specialty. The University Clinic for Ophthalmology is one of the largest departments of Maastricht UMC+. The clinic has an excellent infrastructure with advanced diagnostic and therapeutic technology as well as a direct link to science. The ongoing ageing of the population implies that the number of people with eye disorders (such as cataract, macular degeneration and glaucoma) will increase substantially over the next few years. Thanks to new knowledge and technology, treatment options are increasing. These include the use of innovative biomaterials for controlled release of medication and smart technology systems and robotics to improve patient safety and therapy efficacy. With all our hearts, we are dedicated to provide the best possible care and to improve health by integrating patient care, research and education.
