Circle of Innovation  Cataract + Cataract is caused by clouding of the ocular lens, in which case an artificial lens is needed. + Maastricht UMC+ has developed a multifocal and self accommodating lens, so patients do not need glasses anymore after cataract surgery. + Chemelot InSciTe is working on the development of biomaterials that allow controlled release of medication during a period of a week to several months. Maastricht UMC+ Circle of Innovation® OPTIMIZATION OF COMMON INTERVENTIONS + Cataract is common in older people. + We improve the patient’s quality of life by using the latest scientific insights regarding cataract surgery. + Maastricht investigators have developed unique biomaterials that can release medication to the eye for up to four weeks, which means that the patients do not have to apply eye drops themselves. This reduces the side effects. NEW BIOMATERIALS IN OPHTHALMOLOGY Generating knowledge ACADEMIC CARE IN THE REGION MICROSCOPIC SURGERY + Each year, 2,400 cataract operations are carried out at Maastricht UMC+ (180,000 in the Netherlands). + With six centres in the Euregion, patients can receive treatments at a location close to their own social network. + We collaborate very closely with the industry, thus creating a unique environment for innovation. + The new generation of ophthalmologists is trained to use the latest technologies. + The clouded lens is replaced by an artificial lens by means of microsurgery. + Our academic eye clinic has developed a technique to make a very precise incision in the eye by means of femtosecond laser in order to replace the lens. + Innovative treatment methods are scientifically evaluated for evidence-based applications. + Cost-effectiveness analyses show that the new treatment techniques reduce healthcare costs.
