Circle of Innovation  Osteoarthritis LIVING IS MOVING CARTILAGE DEVELOPMENT + We study how cartilage develops and how ageing or disease influences this development in the laboratory for experimental orthopaedics. + Together with MERLN, the institute for regenerative medicine, we are unravelling the underlying mechanisms and stimulate stem cells to develop into cartilage. + The 3D structure of the surface on which cells are cultured appears to have an impact on the development of cartilage. Maastricht UMC+ Circle of Innovation® + Patients with osteoarthritis have little or no cartilage in the affected joints and therefore often need prostheses. + Regeneration can supplement lost cartilage. + We provide a multidisciplinary treatment for osteoarthritis. Internal and external care professionals work together so as to maximize the quality of treatment. + The use of online tools (such as questionnaires) improves the delivery of care. FROM 3D MATERIAL TO MOVEMENT ANALYSIS WORKING TOGETHER ON INNOVATION + Osteoarthritis is increasingly common in our ageing society. + Due to cartilage regeneration, fewer prostheses are needed. + Orthopaedic surgeons and physiotherapists are developing movement programmes to reduce the symptoms. + Collaboration with partners such as DSM, Medtronic and the Dutch Arthritis Foundation creates employment and innovation in the future Mosae Vita lifestyle centre. + Our investigators founded six spin-off companies with a total value of over €170 million. + To enhance the quality of cartilage, we are investigating specific cells and growth factors. + Within Chemelot InSciTe, we are developing 3D material for pain control in osteoarthritis and cartilage formation. + Using high-resolution imaging, we visualize cartilage structures and follow the recovery process. + We use CAREN movement analysis to study gait patterns; we develop training programmes for patients with osteoarthritis of the knee.
