Circle of Innovation  Neuromodulation + Using cell biological techniques and imaging, we study the molecular functioning of the brain. + We can examine specific cells by influencing neurons with light (optogenetics). + Combining this with high-resolution imaging techniques (7 Tesla fMRI), we determine which areas of the brain are active during a specific action or emotion. + This is how we know where exactly in the brain we can apply neuromodulation. Maastricht UMC+ Circle of Innovation® LIMITING ADVERSE EFFECTS OF TREATMENT + Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) is a form of neuromodulation that influences the action of the targeted brain area. + Patients with Parkinson’s benefit from DBS, but sometimes experience adverse effects such as depression. + The stimulated area of the brain controls movement as well as emotion. + For a treatment with fewer adverse effects, we have optimised neuromodulation to influence only one specific function. WHICH AREA OF THE BRAIN DO WE TREAT? ANTICIPATING DEMOGRAPHIC DEVELOPMENTS HOW DO WE INFLUENCE THE ACTION OF BRAIN AREAS? + The ageing of the population in Europe leads to a rise in conditions such as Parkinson’s disease and dementia. + Accurate neuromodulation can also be used for future treatment of, for instance, tinnitus and incontinence. + Maastricht UMC+ spearheads treatment of diseases that are difficult to control with medication. + We do not keep our knowledge a secret, but train doctors worldwide how to apply neuromodulation. + Using Deep Brain Stimulation, we send impulses through electrodes to the brain areas that are not functioning well. + We want to avoid influencing adjacent areas of the brain that have a different function. + We develop innovative techniques based on nanomaterials and magnetic fields, termed magnetothermal neuromodulation. + This remote technique is potentially more accurate in stimulating specific neurons.
