Circle of innovation The responsibility of Maastricht UMC+ spans the entire spectrum of the circle of innovation. We are at the cradle of new discoveries. This is our basis for the application of new knowledge and for the development of treatments, interventions and guidelines that contribute to healthy living. Within the circles of innovation, Maastricht UMC+ creates value that - in addition to direct economic effects including employment and cost-effective treatments - leads to a healthier population. Oncology profile: ‘Quality of life after radiotherapy and cancer.’ Quality of life after radiotherapy and cancer is part of the Oncology profile. Each year, over 100,000 Dutch people are confronted with the diagnosis of ‘ cancer’. Population screening programmes and improved treatment and diagnostic techniques are increasing the survival of these patients. A good quality of life is extremely valuable during treatment. Therefore, Maastricht UMC+ focusses on maintaining functional capacity so that the patient’s life, despite the disease, is affected as little as possible. The fundamental knowledge we gain about tumours contributes to new innovations. Examples are lifestyle adaptations for more effective rehabilitation or new treatment methods, such as proton therapy, to prevent adverse effects. Within the OncoZON network, we share knowledge and expertise and combine forces with other oncology partners in the south-east of the Netherlands. With all our hearts, we are dedicated to provide the best possible care and to improve health by integrating patient care, research and education. The plus sign in our name indicates that we distinguish ourselves from other Maastricht UMC+ Portfolio We distinguish ourselves in four profile areas: + Cardiovascular disease + Respiratory disease + Oncology + Brain and neurological disease These profiles cover the total continuum of care and research: from prevention to aftercare, from research to application in healthcare. To strengthen and accelerate the development of the profiles, we have defined three innovation themes: + Metabolism and nutrition + Healthcare innovation + Operational excellence Also, we have three specialties with a strong focus on patient care: + Movement + Ophthalmology + Heredity, reproduction and early development university medical centres for the attention we give to the patients’ environment, lifestyle and predisposition, and therefore to prevention.
