Connecting research with health care
At Maastricht UMC+, we are continually working to improve our standards, whether in health care, research or academic training. Drawing on knowledge, expertise and medical skills from around the world, our ambition is to excel internationally in our research, and position ourselves as one of Europe’s leading medical centers.
Leading through research
We are aware that investing in research is essential if we are to continue offering the very highest standards of health care. For this reason, we have a vertical research chain that intersects directly with our horizontal chain of health care, and which enables us to introduce new techniques into our hospital rapidly and effectively.
This vertical chain takes us from fundamental research, via translational research, to clinically applied research, and it covers a broad area, ranging from the molecular level right through to the level of the global population.
High-quality specialization
Research at Maastricht UMC+ takes place in our five graduate schools. Research fields are carefully selected in coordination with patient care, focusing on socially important areas of medical research. In this way, we make the most effective use of our funding and resources.
Each graduate school selects two or three major research themes to pursue from within its field of research.
Through this targeted approach, we are able to produce in-depth, high-quality and high-impact results. To improve our results still further, we actively seek to promote public-private cooperation at Maastricht UMC+, combining the innovative capabilities of the industrial and academic sectors to provide patients with the most effective treatment available.
Progress through cooperation
Knowledge that is never applied is knowledge wasted. We are aware of this at Maastricht UMC+, and therefore place particular emphasis on the idea of knowledge value creation – directly using knowledge to ensure it has some kind of social value. Our aim at Maastricht UMC+ is to connect our vertical ‘research’ chain with our horizontal ‘health care’ chain by developing and promoting marketoriented, innovative products and applications that are focused on medical technology. To help us in this, we have established several organizations, such as BioMedbooster, the Biopartner Center and the Maastricht UMC+ Holding, where we can bring together the right cooperation partners to put innovative ideas into practice.
Our ambition is to excel internationally in our research, and position ourselves as one of Europe’s leading medical centers. |
